Sport Jujitsu Introduction
Although rooted in the ancient martial art of jujitsu, Sport Ju-jitsu encompasses all fighting ranges and forms: strikes, kicks, sweeps, throws, grappling and pins. Cadet and adult competitors are also allowed joint-lock and choke submissions.
These different skills encourage martial artists from all backgrounds to compete and test both their fighting and defensive skills thus allowing kick boxers and karate fighters to compete on an equal footing with judo and jujitsu exponents. Of course, each style needs to acquire some of the fighting skills of the other to compete successfully in the Sport Ju-jitsu arena which is why many competitors 'cross train' in several styles to enhance their arsenal of techniques.
Points are awarded for punches and kicks to the target areas: torso, forehead, side of head, throws, pins and in cadet/adult competition submissions.
Although full contact sport ju-jitsu contests do occur, the majority of international and national competitions, and the only type that the IASJ compete in are the fighter friendly, semi contact variety, where the emphasis is on crisp controlled fighting techniques rather than full force.
A Clarification:
The world of martial arts is brimming over with associations and governing bodies and many of these associations run their own versions of 'Sport Ju-jitsu' with their own rules and regulations. Because of this (or in spite of) Sport Ju-jitsu, as a generic term of reference, can be quite confusing to the newcomer and enthusiast alike.
All references to the term 'Sport Ju-jitsu' on our site(s) refers to the Sport Ju-jitsu practised by and governed by, the Amateur Martial Association (AMA), the AMA sponsored Great Britain Squad and the organisations that the AMA is affiliated to, including the International Sport Ju-jitsu Association (ISJA) the WCJJO, World Council of Ju-jitsu Organisations and the JJIF, the Jujitsu International Federation.
The rules and regulations issued by these governing bodies covers all Sport Ju-jitsu and Ground Grappling competitions for adults and juniors at both UK local, national and international competition.
