A Short History of the squad
The GB AMA Squad started out as the Great Britain Sport Ju-Jitsu Squad in 1996 when a team was created to participate on behalf of the AMA (Amateur Martial Associations) in the JJIF (Ju-Jitsu International Federation) championships in Paris France. In 1997 the squad travelled to Stockholm for the JJIF European Championships and to Vancouver, Canada for the ISJA (International Sport Ju-Jitsu Association) world championships.
In 1998 the WCJJO (World Council Of Ju-Jitsu Organisations) World Championships were held in Reno, Nevada USA and a year later the squad took part in the JJIF European's which were hosted in the UK at Leeds followed in 2000 by the ISJA World Championships which were also hosted in Leeds.
In 2001 the squad travelled to Jersey for the WCJJO championships. In 2004 the GB squad successfully defended their WCJJO world team title in Kitchener, Canada winning it for the forth occasion in a row. In between these international competitions several freestyle and grappling tournaments have been arranged. These events help provide funds for the squad to compete internationally and showcase any new talent.
Although not strictly part of the AMA, squad members are from AMA sanctioned clubs with non AMA members being encouraged to become members. In early 2003, the squad became the AMA British Sport Ju-Jitsu Squad and is now more closely involved with the AMA.
